Thureophoroi infantry command

Thureophoroi infantry command

A variation on the common peltast, the Thureophoroi were equipped with heavier weaponry and intended to fill the gap between the light peltast and the might of the phalanx.

The Thureophoroi were so named for the distinctive oval shield they carried called the thureos. Both Thracian and Illyrian infantry adopted the shield before the Greeks, one theory being that it was introduced by Pyrrhus of Epirus, whose Roman enemies and Italian tribal allies used the similar scutum shield.

Warlord Games' Thureophoroi miniatures are depicted wearing the distinctive Illyrian style helmet, making them suitable for inclusion in Early Epirote, Illyrian, and Southern Illyrian armies as Illyrian infantry. Thureophoroi are also suitable for the Late Macedonian, Later Hoplite Greek, and Hellenistic Greek army lists as featured in the Hail Caesar Army Lists: Biblical to Early Medieval supplement.
